Sidley toil but progress in cup

(October 14, 2017)

Sidley United 1 - 0 St Francis Rangers II - Sussex FA Intermediate Cup Second Round

Sidley United endured a mostly frustrating afternoon but still did enough to make it through to the next round of the Sussex FA Intermediate Cup.

The Blues began well and took an early lead as the lively Andy Garman beat his man and crossed for Adam Day to head home after only 6 minutes.

St Francis' main tactic was to play a long ball over the top but the Sidley defence, led superbly by Chris Copley, dominated and didn't allow any opportunity for opponent players to get in on goal.

That said, Sidley didn't fashion too many chances themselves despite dominating possession. The closest they came was when Sean Baldwin was played through on goal but the goalkeeper kept out his lobbed effort.

Sidley were even more dominant after the break and only two more excellent saves by the visiting goalkeeper denied them extending their lead. Even when the Blues finally did beat him their luck was out as Baldwin saw his effort come back off the post.

Luckily for Sidley though the early goal was enough to see them through against a Rangers side who failed to force George Aston in the Blues goal into a single save all game.

Sidley Team: Aston, Elphick, Hempe, Copley, Cole, Cooper, Elliott-Noye, Thompson (Bailey), Day (Miller), Garman (May), Baldwin.
