Sidley fall to defeat in final home game

(April 21, 2018)

Sidley United 0 - 1 Bexhill Town - ESFL Premier Division

Sidley United slipped to defeat in their final home match of the season as Bexhill Town took the points in this end of season local derby.

A hot afternoon which necessitated drinks breaks in both halves for the players produced few chances. In the first half a Bexhill corner was headed off the line by Ian May whilst at the other end Sean Baldwin and Ash Elphick were off target for the Blues.

But Sidley gave away some rather needless free kicks and from one such set piece on 41 minutes Bexhill took the lead as the ball was poked home from inside the area by Kelvin Lowes.

Sidley began the second half positively and thought they had a way back into the game when a Sidley forward was brought down by the Town goalkeeper. However to the disbelief of the Sidley faithful the referee chose not to award the penalty despite the strong appeals and rather sheepishly restarted play with a goal kick.

The Blues continued to enjoy the bulk of the pressure as Town looked to hit them on the break. But despite Sidley battering them, the well organised Town defence held firm as the visitors took all 3 points.

A disappointing result but with two more matches and a cup final left Sidley are still on course for their best campaign since joining the East Sussex Football League.

Sidley Team: Rogers, May, Hempe, Copley, Funnell, Elliott-Noye, Wells, Elphick (Robb), Scrace, L Carey, Baldwin.
