Late goals see Lingfield steal win

(December 12, 2012)

Matt Darby 2012

Two late goals at a freezing Gullivers turned a potential win against top 6 opposition into a last minute defeat.

With most other games around the County postponed due to the freezing temperatures, the game was only given the go ahead to play some five minutes before kick off time. The opening exchanges were fairly even but Lingfield took the lead when a mis-hit goalkick from McEnery went straight to Louis Gallagher who ran through to open the scoring.

Sidley got back into the game on the half hour mark. A shot from outside the box fell at the feet of debutant David Pugh and despite looking suspiciously offside, Pugh tucked the ball away to bring Sidley level.

In the first minute of the second half Matt Darby took advantage of some poor defending to round the goalkeeper and put Sidley into the lead. However, this was cancelled out with a harsh looking penalty against Cruikshank for handball which Lingfield converted with ease.

With both teams really going for the win Sidley looked like they had won it on 81 minutes when substitute Jason Taylor was played in and he exquisitely lifted the ball over the goalkeeper. But Blues dropped deep to try and defend the lead and paid the price on 86 minutes when the ball cannoned about and seemed to go under McEnery to bring Lingfield level.

And with almost the last kick of the game, a great strike hit the underside of McEnery's bar and the follow up was rattled home. The linesman originally flagged the goal as offside but after consultation with the referee the goal was given.

A rip-roaring encounter to warm the viewing crowd but unfortunately not the result Sidley were hoping for.

Sidley Team: McEnery, Willett, Rea, Cooper, Cruikshank, Agutter, Martin, A Darby (Taylor), M Darby, Hales, Pugh.
