Blues beaten in semi final by Northiam

(March 10, 2018)

Sidley United 0 - 3 Northiam 75 - ESFL Premier Travel Challenge Cup Semi Final

Sidley United saw a chance of silverware disappear as Division One leaders Northiam earned a 3 - 0 win to progress to the final of the ESFL Premier Travel Challenge Cup.

The Blues knew they would be in for a tough match against a Northiam team who have been prolific in the league this season but it was their defensive organisation which frustrated Blues early on as a number of corners came to nothing.

At the other end, Northiam struck as a lovely passing move was finished off by leading marksman Scott Embery who slotted low past Joe Rogers on 23 minutes.

Sidley huffed and puffed but Northiam defended resolutely and only a couple of half chances fell for Arron Scrace before the interval.

In the second half Northiam grabbed a simple second goal as a free kick was nodded down to Stephen Housago who slotted home on 58 minutes.

Blues pressed after that and enjoyed the bulk of the possession but failed to create any real clear chance as Northiam's dogged and determined approach to the game served them well.

And with Sidley pushing men forward and taking chances defensively, Northiam wrapped it up on the break in the 89th minute as Embery was left in space and finished low past Rogers to put the seal on the win.

A disappointing afternoon for Sidley but credit a Northiam side who were worth the win and on this showing will hold their own in the Premier Division next season. The Blues are without a game next weekend.

Sidley Team: Rogers, May, Funnell, Cole, Copley, Thompson (Carey), Wells, Elliott-Noye, Elphick (Day), Scrace (Bailey), Baldwin.
