Blues see off Robertsbridge to progress in cup
(October 07, 2017)
Sidley United 2 - 1 Robertsbridge United - Hastings FA Intermediate Cup
Sidley United progressed to the next round of this cup competition with a home victory over Robertsbridge United.
Still missing a recognised goalkeeper it was the turn of George Aston to take over the gloves this week, with Gary Hempe returning to his more accustomed role at wing back. Sidley also gave a start to new signing Andy Garman, who was to play a pivotal role in the result.
Sidley started well, often getting on the front foot and taking the game to their opponents. They opened the scoring on 19 minutes when top scorer Sean Baldwin met Garman's delicious ball in from the right to powerfully head home.
Aston was called upon twice to make key saves, first using his feet well to block a low shot before excellently tipping an effort over the bar. Sidley then got a second as Garman again skipped past his man and flashed a low cross in which was met at the back post by Hempe who thumped his effort into the net to give Sidley a 2 - 0 half time lead.
But as with the previous week Sidley failed to really get going in the second half, seeming to drop deeper and handing Robertsbridge the territorial advantage.
And the visitors struck on 72 minutes through Philip Green. Baldwin nearly restored the 2 goal lead but hit the post for Sidley and the Blues were grateful to Aston for another good save late on to make sure of the win.
Sidley will play Westfield in the Quarter Finals.
Sidley Team: G Aston, Elphick (May), Hempe, Copley, Funnell, Carey, Thompson, Cooper (Miller), Garman, Day, Baldwin.
