Last gasp Garman free kick seals Sidley win
(November 25, 2017)
Rogate 08 1 - 2 Sidley United - Sussex FA Intermediate Cup
Andy Garman struck a 94th minute free kick to win the match as Sidley United progressed to the next round of the Sussex FA Intermediate Cup.
West Sussex side Rogate started brightly, forcing a succession of corners from which they had a half-hearted appeal for a goal as the ball struck the Sidley crossbar and bounced down on but not over the goal-line.
At the other end the Blues also struck the woodwork when Dan Hill headed against the bar before they took a 22nd minute lead. Ash Elphick was brought down in the area after a driving run and Hill sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Rogate played their way back into the game though and they levelled 4 minutes before half time. A nice passing move ended with a Rogate player neatly chipping Joe Rogers to restore parity.
The second half was an open affair as both sides looked for the next goal and some rather desperate challenges resulted in a number of yellow cards for both sides. The home side came close with a shot that hit the post and rolled across the six yard area with nobody there to tap home.
And just as the game looked like heading for extra time, Sidley snatched the winner. Garman's free kick evaded everyone and seemed to surprise the Rogate goalkeeper who got a hand to it but only helped it into the net.
Sidley will travel to Mile Oak Reserves in the Fourth Round.
Sidley Team: Rogers, May (Uttley), Hempe, Cole (Day), Copley, Elliott-Noye, Elphick (Miller), Wells, Hill, Scrace, Garman.
