Blues up to fourth despite poor draw
(February 17, 2018)
Sidley United 1 - 1 Hawkhurst United - ESFL Premier Division
Sidley United went fourth in the table despite a poor performance as they drew 1 - 1 at home to Hawkhurst United.
The Blues gave a debut to new signing Corey Scott, signed from Sedlescombe Rangers, in midfield but it was his young team-mate Rosh Wells who got Sidley off to a terrific start as his low 25 yard shot hit the inside of the post and rolled across the goal line and into the net on 4 minutes.
But after that Sidley put in a largely listless performance despite Hawkhurst having to play the opening 15 minutes with only 10 players. Once the numbers were evened up though Sidley did have a golden chance to double the lead as the away goalkeeper gifted the ball to Arron Scrace but his reluctance to shoot early meant the chance went begging.
Hawkhurst came more into the game on a bobbly pitch as Sidley seemed off the pace and only two good saves by goalkeeper Joe Rogers kept the Blues in front before half time.
But on 64 minutes Robert Guile took advantage of some slack defending to draw the visitors level with a shot high into the net from just inside the penalty area. That setback failed to stir Sidley from their slumber and they perhaps were glad to come away with a point in the end given their performance.
A disappointing display today but Blues still moved up two places in the table and will hope to consolidate their position by playing better and taking points from the games in hand they have on the teams around them.
Sidley Team: Rogers, May, Elphick (Hardy), Cole, Copley, Carey (Bailey), Scott, Wells (Hill), Elliott-Noye, Scrace, Baldwin.
