Blues hit double figures in Cup win; Reserves edge through
(January 22, 2022)
Sidley United 10 - 2 AFC Uckfield II - Sussex FA Intermediate Cup Third Round
It wasn't quite a perfect 10 for the Blues but they still hit double figures to progress to the Quarter Finals of the Sussex FA Intermediate Cup.
In their first match back at Little Common Rec this season, the Blues never looked overly troubled by their Championship visitors and Nathan Crabb finished off a lovely flowing move to open the scoring on 14 minutes before some great play by Joe McCue set up Charlie Cornford to make it 2 on 21 minutes.
Paul Rogers converted on 31 minutes and Toby Clifford fired home on 37 minutes before Josh Elliott-Noye scored with a delightful chip after bursting through from midfield on 44 minutes to give the Blues a comfortable 5 - 0 lead at half time.
Nathan Crabb got his second goal just 30 seconds into the second half but the visitors responded when Zac Bignell hit a terrific free kick into the top corner on 57 minutes.
Undeterred though, McCue got his second on 60 minutes from close range before Rogers turned and fired home via the inside of the post on 71 minutes. Lee Carey nodded home on 83 minutes and the sought after 10th goal went to Clifford who slotted home a square ball from Danny Ellis in stoppage time.
There was still time for Uckfield to grab the last goal; a cross from the left was headed home by Mitch Pope but the final whistle blew shortly after as Sidley set up a home tie against West Sussex outfit Harting in the Quarter Finals. Next week the Blues are back at The Oval as they take on Sedlescombe in the league.
Sidley Team: Hutchins, Walker, McEniry, Elliott-Noye (J Carey), McCue, Clifford, L Carey, Ellis, N Crabb (Smart), Cornford (Hickman-Smith), Rogers.
SC Pass & Move Arrows 1 - 2 Sidley United II - Hastings FA Junior Cup
The Sidley United II side came out on top in the battle of the last remaining Division One sides to progress through to the Semi Finals of the Hastings FA Junior Cup.
The Blues began the game defending on the downhill slope with the Arrows on the front foot although the blues back line held firm, limiting opportunities for the home side. However a clever ball from the home side found a player in behind the Sidley’s defence but he was denied the opening goal by the linesman’s flag.
On the stroke of half-time and against the run of play the Sidely took the lead as a header from Rosh Wells found its way to Sean Baldwin, who saw the home goalkeeper off his line and hit an instinctive half volley from around 35 yards out over him and into the net to leave the home side stunned.
The second half saw the Arrows continue to push for the equaliser but Sidley doubled their lead as a clever run Simon Corke saw him get through on goal and he beat the onrushing goalkeeper to the ball and lofted it over him and into the bottom left corner of the net.
The home side started to throw more men forward and with 10 minutes to go they pulled a goal back as a cleared long throw in was played back in and bypassed everyone, landing at the feet of Harley Discala at the back post to cleverly slot home to set up a nervy last 10 minutes.
The home side threw everything at it but Sidley held out until the final whistle as Sidley progressed to the Semi Finals where they will face either Westfield Reserves or AFC Hollington.
The Dynamic Scaffolding Man of the Match was Marc Ransom who commanded the solid Sidley back line and made some vital interceptions.
Sidley Team: Gray, Davies, Hempe, Ransom, Vincent, Tomlinson, Corke, Wells, Elphick, Baldwin, Williams. Subs: Dangerfield, Stovell, Hardy.
