Blues go 3 clear; Arrows pierce Reserves
(January 29, 2022)
Sidley United 4 - 1 Sedlescombe Rangers- MSFL Premier Division
Sidley United restored their three point lead at the top of the Mid Sussex Premier Division after battling to victory over basement side Sedlescombe Rangers.
In blustery conditions and a difficult Oval pitch, the Blues took an early lead through Danny Ellis' 6th minute goal following a goal-mouth scramble but the visitors responded almost immediately as Dan Tyler finished off training ground routine to level the scores on 10 minutes.
The rest of the half was a scrappy affair with Sidley seeing several chances to take the lead go begging as Paul Rogers, Toby Clifford and Steve Hickman-Smith all failing to convert as the first half ended with honours even.
But early in the second half the Blues went in front when Lee Carey's corner was touched home by Zac McEniry on 50 minutes. The game was then marked by a raft of substitutions but Sidley did well to deny any chance for Rangers to get themselves back in the game with Man of the Match Steve Hickman-Smith particularly effective.
Sidley won a penalty when Josh Elliott-Noye was pushed over and Paul Rogers converted the spot kick on 83 minutes before Elliott-Noye added some gloss to the scoreline by capitalising on a defensive mix up to slot home a fourth goal on 89 minutes.
Next week Sidley welcome an improving Eastbourne Rangers to Little Common Rec when they will seek a better all round performance but hopefully the same winning result.
Sidley Team: Hutchins, Walker, McEniry, Elliott-Noye, Hickman-Smith, McCue, Ellis, Carey, Clifford, Cornford, Cumming-Bart, Rogers. Subs: Featherstone, Trickett, Capon, S Crabb.
SC Pas, & Move Arrows 5 - 1 Sidley United II - ESFL Division One
It was a day to forget for the Reserves as they missed the chance to go top of the ESFL Division One, crashing to a heavy defeat to SC Pass & Move as goalkeeper Ritchie Gray was sent off.
Coming off a defensive battle against the same side the week before, the Blues hoped to execute the same tactic. However mistakes all across the pitch were made and the Arrows fired themselves into a 3 - 0 lead at half time with the Blues best chance falling to Joe Vincent who just couldn't quite get on the end of a ball fired across by Ash Elphick.
Shell shocked at half time the Blues had a plan to get back into the game shooting downhill but it never came to pass as the Arrows added 2 more goals to their tally before Gray was given his marching orders for a second yellow card for throwing the ball at the celebrating opposition.
The Blues, knowing the game was gone, started to get some more chances and pulled one goal back from the penalty spot after Alex Williams was brought down after a driving run and he picked himself up to bury the penalty to grab a consolation goal.
Certainly a week to forget for the Blues but with Bexhill A.A.C also losing, the title race is still wide open.
Sidley Team: Gray, Davies, Hempe, Ransom, Tomlinson, Wells, Vincent, Corke, Elphick, Williams, Baldwin. Subs: Dangerfield, Hardy.
