Blues denied epic win as game abandoned
(February 24, 2024)
Sidley United A - A Westfield II - ESFL Premier Division
Sidley United's best performance at the season proved to be in vein as their match with Westfield II was abandonded due to the weather on 60 minutes with the Blues 5 - 0 up on the team third in the table.
In difficult but playable conditions, Sidley tore into the Westies taking the lead through Archie Ball on 11 minutes before Logan Copley capitalised on a mistake by the Westfield goalkeeper to double the lead on 18 minutes.
Copley then grabbed a third goal with a left foot finish from the edge of the area on 30 minutes and wrapped up his hat-trick in the final minute of the first half by slotting home from close range.
Sidley did their best to ensure the second half could kick off and the referee started the second period which saw Sidley grab a fifth when Copley struck from a cut-back on 50 minutes to make it 5 - 0.
The rain was stop start but the pitch was cutting up and on 60 minutes, to the frustration of both sides with Westfield also wanting the game to end, the referee deemed the pitch to no longer be playable and called the game off.
Sidley Team: Gray, May, Hempe, Carey, Jack, Eldridge, S.Atkin, T.Atkin, Ball, A.Atkin, Copley. Subs: Freeman, K.Atkin.
