Battling Blues beaten by league leaders
(April 17, 2024)
Sidley United 0 - 1 Rye Town - ESFL Premier Division
Sidley United put in a battling performance against the champions elect as they were just edged out in a narrow defeat at Hooe Rec.
The first half was a fairly even battle with neither team creating much in the way of clear cut chances with most of the game being played in the middle of the park. Rye almost scored right on the stroke of half time with a spectacular strike from fully 40 yards which Ritchie Gray did well to tip over the bar.
In the second half, Rye grabbed the all important goal on 54 minutes as a good ball through found Sam Hesmer who stayed onside and slotted beyond Gray.
Sidley were undeterred and Will Witham almost found an equalier as his curling effort went just wide of the far post.
With darkness quickly coming in, Rye looked to keep the ball away from danger but Sidley nearly snatched an equaliser with a late Cam Burgon free kick which was fiercly struck but just wide of the post.
In the end though Rye held on to claim the points that put them on the brink of the ESFL title. Sidley are back in action on Saturday with the match against Bexhill Town switched to Hooe Rec for our penultimate match their this season.
