Penalty perfect Blues squeeze through in cup
(September 28, 2024)
Sidley United 2 - 2 Sedlescombe Rangers (Sidley United win 5 - 4 on penalties) - Macron Hastings Challenge Cup First Round
Sidley United produced the perfect penalty shoot out performance as they squeezed past bottom side Sedlescombe Rangers to progress into Round Two of the Macron Hastings Challenge Cup.
The visitors enjoyed success in the league against Rangers earlier this month and seemed to get off to the perfect start here as Andy Atkin headed home a corner on 31 minutes to put Sidley in front but the visitors equalised almost immediately through Brooklyn Pennells as the first half ended level.
Pennells then grabbed a goal on 49 minutes to put Rangers in front and it looked as if Sidley might be heading for an early cup exit until a Rangers player headed a cross into his own net on 82 minutes to bring Sidley level. Both sides pushed for a winning goal but the game ended all square setting up a penalty shoot out.
Whilst Sidley scored all five of their penalties, goalkeeper Ritchie Gray's save meant that the Blues prevailed to set up a tie against Bexhill A.A.C in Round Two.
Sidley Team: Gray, May, Hempe, Jack, Carey, McCue, Lyne, S.Atkin, Ball, T.Atkin, A.Atkin. Subs: Laver, L.Mote, Rispoli.
