Late drama earns Blues a point
(March 19, 2011)
Sidley United salvaged a point at home to Arundel today after a late penalty and red card which saw the game end 1 - 1.
The Blues started well but lost Kevin Bird to a nasty head injury after 20 minutes. Arundel played the ball around well and took the lead when a cross from the right found Lewis Hamilton who slotted past Gavin Bourne.
In the second half both teams pressed, but little chances were created. The game turned with 5 minutes to go when Terry Payne went over in the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty. In the ensuing arguments, the referee sent off the Arundel right back as well as booking two Sidley players. Payne picked himself up to convert the penalty.
However, in the dying moments Sidley couldn't fashion another good opportunity to win the game and Arundel happily took away a point from a game which was poorly refereed. The Reserves however won 1 - 0 away to Rustington and are now through to the Challenge Cup Semi Finals.
Sidley Team: Bourne, Chandler (Jules), Cody, Rea, Spice, Kelly, Dadswell, Taylor (McDonald), Bird (Craig), Barden, Payne.
