Sidley win thriller after extra time
(September 10, 2011)
Sidley United won a belting FA Vase cup tie 4 - 2 after extra time against AFC Uckfield.
In a match that had almost everything, Lewis Hole opened the scoring on 40 minutes, delightfully liftng the ball over the visiting goalkeeper.
AFC Uckfield equalised on 55 minutes when Chris Gould's free kick found the back of the net. Despite this Sidley got back on top and missed a number of good chances right at the death and so the game went into extra time.
It was Uckfield who struck first when a free kick from the left was flashed across goal and Drew Greenall poked it into the net. But Sidley responded well in the second period and supersub Scott McDonald equalised with a poked finish on 108 minutes and then put the Blues in front on 115 with a lovely drive into the corner. Sidley made sure of the win when Jason Taylor finished the game off 2 minutes from the end of extra time with a high shot into the corner.
The one sour note for Sidley was the second half injury to captain Dan Spice, who looks like he may miss some considerable time. We hope he recovers quickly.
Sidley Team: Bourne, Rea, Tuppeney, Spice (Brand), Cruikshank, Munday, Agutter (McDonald), Taylor, Barden (Bird), Hole, S Morris.
