Criminal Sidley throw away cup
(March 27, 2012)
Sidley United 3 - 4 Bexhill United - Tuesday 27th March - Hastings Senior Cup Final
Sidley United blew their last remaining opportunity to lift some silverware this season after throwing away a lead in the dying seconds against 10 man Bexhill United.
A poor performance from the Blues saw them go 1 down early on with Paul Rogers fine finish putting the Division Two side in front. Sidley got a bit of luck when Gavin Bourne miskicked and then had to bring down a Sidley forward which earned him a red card and the Blues a penalty which Ben White converted.
Sidley went in front just after half time as Chris Gould lifted the ball over stand in goalkeeper Joe Rogers. But despite this advantage Sidley still failed to play with any quality and were pegged back as Martin Denny got a lucky break to steer past Willis.
Sidley went back in front in bizarre circumstances on 89 minutes as a tame backpass took a bounce in Paul Robinson style and Rogers had to watch the ball creep over the line. But incredibly Sidley were unable to defend and Bexhill strike twice as the game ticked over towards the final whistle. First Andy Garman brilliantly fired in a volley before Rogers stole the winner with a deflected shot.
An immensely disappointing night for the Blues who really never got going and in the end deserved to lose. A big response needed to this performance.
Sidley Team: Willis, Rea, B White, Cruikshank, Brand, C McDonald (Masters) Patten, Taylor, McMinigal, Gould (S Morris), Barden (Hole).
