Sidley open campaign with a win
(August 05, 2012)
Sidley United kicked off the 2012/13 campaign with a 3 - 1 win against 10 man Worthing United.
The Blues played the better football in the first half but found themselves a goal down on 12 minutes as a good free kick into the box was palmed by goalkeeper Matt Dann and seemed to bounce off a Sidley head and found the back of the net.
Sidley bounced back quickly however as the returning Zac McEnery was played through beautifully and slid in with the goalkeeper, who didn't hold the ball and from a tight angle McEnery ensured parity. Worthing appeals fell on deaf ears as the linesman confirmed that the goalkeeper did not have the bal in his hands.
Blues were getting more and more on top and on 31 minutes Liam Miles was clean through on goal when he was pulled down by home defender Paul Curtis. The referee showed a straight red, much to the home side's annoyance. Sidley didn't take long to capitalise. A Chris Agutter free kick on 35 minutes was met by the unmarked Dom Clarke who nodded home to put Sidley in front at the break.
After the interval, Sidley didn't come out with the same energy as they played with in the first half and Worthing got on top. A succession of home corners failed to bring about an equaliser as Sidley hit on the break. They finally killed the game off on 85 minutes when Billy Trickett found himself unmarked in the area to head home the third goal.
Not a completely perfect performance from the Blues, but a winning start ahead of what will be a tough trip to Peacehaven on Wednesday.
Sidley Team: Dann, Brand, Mitiadou, McEnery, Rea, Agutter, Trickett, Darby, Taylor (Hesmer), Miles (Gould), Clarke (Rose).
