Slick Sidley progress in cup
(September 15, 2012)
Sidley United turned in a performance of the season as they beat Lancing 4 - 1 in the John O Hara Cup.
Sidley started well against a good Lancing side but good chances were at a premium for the first 20 minutes. Sidley took the lead with the best move of the match, Jason Taylor turning the ball into the path of substitute Sam Willett who turned home on his Sidley debut.
Kenny Pogue doubled the lead 8 minutes later as a long ball forward was left by both defender and goalkeeper, allowing Pogue to nip in and lift it over the goalkeeper and into the net as Sidley led 2 - 0 at the break.
Lancing struck early in the second half as Darren Boswell steered home a cross as Sidley ball watched. But the 2 goal cushion was restored almost immediately. A contentious free kick was given in Sidley's favour and from the ball in Zac McEnery slid home on 53 minutes.
Tempers became a bit frayed as Lancing felt aggrieved by some refereeing decisions but Sidley kept their heads and kept playing the football. They wrapped up the win on 93 minutes when another substitute, Terry Payne, headed home a Taylor cross.
A very impressive performance from the Blues today in their first match of the season at Gullivers and safe passage into the next round of the cup.
Sidley Team: Pelling, Mitiadou, Hales (Willett), McEnery, Cruikshank, Agutter, Darby, Taylor, McMinigal (Bird), Clarke, Pogue (Payne)
