Battling Blues earn point from leaders
(January 05, 2013)
Sidley United 0 - 0 Peacehaven & Telscombe - Division One
The Blues provided a tonic to missing boss John Lambert today with a worthy draw against league leaders Peacehaven at the Gullivers this afternoon. The draw ended 15 consecutive wins in all competitions for the Haven.
Assistant Manager Jamie Podmore took charge of the game along with Peter Heritage, whilst Lambert looked on from the sidelines making a surprise appearance in the crowd despite suffering from the sickness bug doing the rounds.
After being mauled 9 - 1 by the same opponents in August, Sidley were determined to get something from the match. In all truth the conditions made things very difficult for either side to play pretty football and very little was created in the first half in the way of clear cut scoring opportunities.
Peacehaven had a lot of possession and the threat of a goal was always there, Sidley defenders having to make sure they never lost concentration. But it was actually Sidley who came closest to scoring in the first half as right on the whistle a surging run from Jason Taylor saw him play in Matt Darby 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper but Darby steered his effort just wide of the post.
In the second half Sidley again came closest to scoring when Taylor's ball in was flicked on by Pugh into the path of Dean Boyd but his instinctive stab at goal went just wide of the far post. As the game ticked on, Sidley dropped deeper and Peacehaven enjoyed the vast majority of possession. The few chances that were created however were charged down by defenders as Sidley valiantly battled for their point.
A great result against classy opposition who are surely destined for promotion come May. The result lifted Sidley up two places in the table and hopefully will boost confidence ahead of Tuesday's match.
Sidley Team: Nessling, Willett, Hales, Cooper, Cruikshank, Agutter, Darby, Boyd (Brown), Martin, Taylor (McEnery), Pugh.
