Super Sidley down Pagham
(February 23, 2013)
Sidley United bagged a goal in each half and put in a tremendous defensive display to beat Pagham 2 - 0.
In an eventful first half, Pagham dominated the opening ten minutes before a flashpoint between Nessling and a Pagham forward saw both booked, although the Pagham forward can consider himself lucky not to be sent off after he pushed Nessling over.
Sidley went in front on 23 minutes as the ball dropped to Sam Willett, who took the ball to the deadline and cut the ball back to Jason Taylor who tapped home. Nessling then had to be substituted after being injured when he fell badly and defender Kevin Rose took over the gloves, with Jack Cooper coming onto the field.
In the second half, the excellent Daren Pearce controlled the midfield for Pagham, albeit without them creating much and it was Sidley who went close when Payne was put through one-on-one but saw the Pagham goalkeeper block his effort. He made up for it just a few minutes later though as he turned his man and curled the ball into the net to put Sidley two up.
Pagham pressed and Sidley dropped deep to defend but actually Pagham failed to test Rose seriously, just one good save with his knees required as we ticked towards the final whistle. Sidley had further opportunities to put the game to bed but ultimately defended their two-goal lead well to see out the game for a valuable 3 points.
A great all-round team display today with everyone really putting in a shift. Three massive points which lift us further away from the bottom three.
Sidley Team: Nessling (Cooper), Willett, Radley, Rose, Cruikshank, Agutter, Martin, Darby, Hales, Taylor, Payne (Boyd)
