Battling Blues beaten by Rye
(April 01, 2013)
Sidley United proudced a valiant effort after going 2 goals behind early on but it wasn't enough as they went down 2 - 1 at home to Rye United.
Sidley had the first good chance as Ashley Darby fed cousin Matt but he steered his effort just wide of the far post. Blues fell behind after just 7 minutes as Cooper attempted to head back home to Nessling but didn't get enough on his header. Former Sidley man Matt McClean nipped in and Nessling bundled him to the floor, resulting in a penalty. Andy Atkin converted low into the corner.
That shook Sidley out of their rhythm and Rye got on top in the first half and a second goal was added as Dom Clarke turned home a low right wing cross on 19 minutes. We could have caved at that point but responded magnificently as Greg Berry scored on 28 minutes with a low shot past the Rye goalkeeper after good work by Andy Hales.
In the second period Rye always looked threatening but found chances harder to come by as Sidley came forward and created openings of their own. the best of those fell to Cruikshank, after a corner was parried by the goalkeeper and Cruikshank's first time effort went over the bar.
A good effort in the end from Sidley against a strong Rye team, but the damage was done early on. If we compete like this though until the end of the season we should be confident of picking up more wins.
Sidley team: Nessling, Cooper, Hales, Rose, Cruikshank, Agutter (Shelton), Martin, Willett, A Darby, M Darby, Berry.
