Lifeless Blues beaten at home
(October 12, 2014)
Sidley United 1 - 3 Wadhurst United
In an explosive start to this game both sides could have scored in the first minute. Ten seconds from kick-off, Sidley's Anthony Briscoe unleashed a fierce drive which struck the underside of the bar, flew down onto the line and bounced out. From the clearance, Wadhurst poured down field where a cross from the right wing was headed over when it seemed impossible to miss.
After this dramatic start, the game became bogged down in midfield with Sidley seming sluggish to react and consequently allowing Wadhurst to win most of the second ball. Eventually, Wadhust got the goal they had been threatening in the 37th minute as they got men forward to support a corner kick, from which they were able to knock the loose ball into the net. Sidley got back on terms early in the second half, when they were awarded a penalty kick after Adam Day was fouled in the box. Taking it himself, Day calmly placed the ball into the corner of the net, to level the score in the 49th minute.
However, this failed to ignite the Sidley players into life, rather it being Wadhurst who upped their game and passed the ball better and to more purpose than the home side. Despite having possibly the biggest pitch in the Division, Sidley failed to make use of the width, attempting to force their way through a congested midfield; much to the frustration of George Carroll who worked hard upfront to make something happenn, despite receiving precious little support. As Sidley ran out of ideas, Wadhurst scored a 2nd goal on 67 mins and killed off the match with a 3rd in the 75th minute; this being a clever lob over the Sidley 'keeper from at least 25 yards out.
Well beaten in the end, Sidley must hope that, if they can get key players back in their proper positions, they will be able to respond to this defeat with a more positive display against their next opponents, Ticehurst, at Hooe this coming Saturday.
