Blues come from behind win in pre season opener
(August 05, 2015)
Sidley United 2 - 1 Westfield Reserves - Wednesday 5th August - Pre Season Friendl
Sidley United came from behind in their first pre-season friendly against the Westfield Reserve side to claim a 2 - 1 win.
Westfield began the stronger against a Blues side featuring a few new faces but their goal owed to a bit of luck as a ball into the box was deflected off the head of a Sidley defender and wrongfooted Joe Rogers in the Sidley goal.
Sidley began to exert themselves after around 20 minutes and began to carve out some good chances but it took until right on the 45 minutes for them to force the equaliser. Mark Funnell hit a shot which somehow found its way into the top corner to level the scores at half time.
In the second half, the usual raft of changes somewhat interrupted the flow of the game but Sidley remained on the front foot and took the lead just after the hour mark. Aaron Cochrane's free kick from the left beat the Westfield high line and allowed Ryan Rankin a free glancing header to put the Blues in front.
James Bailey had a glorious chance to make it 3 but put his strike over the bar and Tim Funnell had a long range strike fly just wide but overall the match was more about getting some fitness under the players' belts and getting the new boys to gel with those returning from last season.
A good workout against a decent Westfield outfit. Next up is Polegate on Saturday 15th August, also at Hooe.
